Developing technologies to extract energy from solar and wind more cheaply and effectively, making smart use of the scarce space available in the region, is critical to unlocking Africa’s clean energy future. Africa is blessed with abundant sunlight and wind resources, yet vast populations remain without access to reliable electricity. Our work focuses on harnessing this potential by supporting the Research, design, development, and deployment of innovative renewable energy technologies that are both affordable and adaptable to local needs.

We prioritize scalable, decentralized energy systems such as solar mini-grids, solar home systems, and hybrid wind-solar installations that can reach communities far beyond the national grid. These systems are not only clean but also flexible—designed to grow with local energy demands, whether for homes, schools, health centers, or agricultural productivity. We also support research into new energy storage technologies and battery solutions that ensure power remains available even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.

Land availability and competing land uses are growing challenges across many parts of Africa, so we are advancing space-efficient solutions like rooftop solar, agro-photovoltaics (solar panels integrated with farming), and floating solar on reservoirs and lakes. These approaches allow us to generate clean power while preserving valuable land for food production, biodiversity, and community needs.

In parallel, we invest in building local capacity through training programs, technical support, and entrepreneurship development. By nurturing a new generation of solar technicians, energy entrepreneurs, and clean energy champions, we ensure that Africa’s energy transition is not only technologically sound but also locally owned and economically inclusive. Our partnerships with governments, private sector actors, and communities are designed to drive policy change, unlock financing, and accelerate the adoption of renewable energy across urban, peri-urban, and rural areas.

Ultimately, we envision a continent where every household, farm, school, and enterprise has access to clean, affordable, and sustainable energy—enabling better livelihoods, economic growth, and climate resilience.
